Skin Cancer Excisions

When a biopsy confirms skin cancer, surgical excision removes the tumor along with a margin of healthy tissue to reduce the chance of recurrence. Most basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas are treated this way.

The procedure is performed in the office under local anesthesia and closed with sutures. The specimen is sent to pathology to confirm the margins are clear. For tumors on the face or in cosmetically sensitive or high-risk areas, we refer for Mohs micrographic surgery, which offers the highest cure rate with the greatest tissue preservation.
