What it is
Sclerotherapy is the gold-standard treatment for spider veins and small varicose veins of the legs. A fine needle is used to inject a medical solution directly into the vessel, irritating its lining so that it collapses, closes, and is gradually reabsorbed by the body. Blood is simply rerouted through healthy nearby veins.
At Avarbock Chamorro Dermatology, sclerotherapy is performed exclusively by Dr. Andrew Avarbock, whose precision and experience guide every treatment. The procedure requires no incisions or anesthesia, and has been used safely for decades.
Indications
Sclerotherapy is used for cosmetic and symptomatic vessels on the legs, and occasionally elsewhere on the body.
Spider veins
The fine red, blue, or purple vessels that branch across the thighs, calves, and ankles.
Small varicose veins
Superficial bulging veins too small to require surgical intervention.
Reticular veins
The blue-green feeder veins that often underlie clusters of spider veins.
Aching and heaviness
Legs that feel tired, heavy, or achy from small incompetent surface vessels.
Post-treatment vessels
Residual vessels remaining after prior vein procedures.
Cosmetic concern
Patients who simply want clearer, more even-looking legs.
Downtime and what to expect afterward
There is no true downtime — you walk immediately after treatment, and most patients return to work the same day. Vigorous exercise, hot baths, and saunas should be avoided for about 48 hours, and we typically recommend compression stockings for several days.
Immediately
Small raised welts and redness at the injection sites, similar to mosquito bites, which settle within an hour. You will walk right away.
Days 1–7
Bruising and mild tenderness along the treated vessels is expected and normal. Compression is worn as directed.
Weeks 2–6
Treated veins darken and gradually fade as the body reabsorbs them. Some may look temporarily more visible before they clear.
Weeks 6–12
Full clearing of the treated vessels. Brownish discoloration along the vein, if it occurs, usually resolves over several months.
Follow-up
Additional sessions are scheduled four to six weeks apart until the desired result is achieved.

Frequently Asked Questions about Sclerotherapy
Does sclerotherapy hurt?
The needles used are very fine. Most patients describe a brief stinging or cramping sensation as the solution is injected, which passes within seconds. No anesthesia is required.
How many sessions will I need?
Most patients need two to four sessions spaced four to six weeks apart, depending on the number and size of the vessels treated. Individual veins often require more than one treatment.
Will the veins come back?
Treated vessels are permanently closed and reabsorbed. However, sclerotherapy does not prevent new spider veins from developing, so touch-up sessions are common over the years.
Do I need to wear compression stockings?
Usually yes. We typically recommend compression for several days to a week after treatment to improve results and reduce bruising. Please bring your compression stockings on the day of your sclerotherapy visit, to be worn after treatment to reduce swelling and improve healing.
Is it covered by insurance?
Sclerotherapy for cosmetic spider veins is generally not covered by insurance. We will review pricing with you before treatment.
Who is not a candidate?
Sclerotherapy is not performed during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or in patients with a history of blood clots or certain circulatory conditions. We review your medical history at your consultation.
