Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP)
At Avarbock Chamorro Dermatology, platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is performed by both Dr. Paola Chamorro and Dr. Andrew Avarbock for skin rejuvenation and hair restoration.
PRP is a regenerative treatment that uses a small sample of your own blood, which is processed to concentrate platelets and naturally occurring growth factors involved in tissue repair and regeneration. When applied after microneedling or precisely injected into targeted areas, these growth factors support collagen production, enhance the skin’s natural healing response, and promote gradual tissue renewal with improvements unfolding naturally over time.
What PRP can do
PRP rejuvenates skin and scalp from within, with visible improvement in texture, tone, and vitality.
Skin quality
Firms and smooths the skin for a healthier, more radiant appearance.
Under-eye area
Helps refresh tired-looking under-eyes and improve skin quality in a delicate area.
Hair restoration
Scalp PRP is used to support hair density in appropriate patients with thinning hair.
Faster healing
Speeds recovery when paired with microneedling or other resurfacing procedures.
Natural approach
Reduces visible signs of aging without synthetic fillers or toxins.
No allergy risk
Uses your own plasma, so there is no risk of an allergic or immune reaction.
What to expect
A PRP visit is straightforward and typically takes about an hour from start to finish.
Consultation
We assess your skin or scalp and determine whether PRP alone or in combination is the right approach.
Blood draw
A small sample of blood is drawn from your arm into a sterile tube.
Processing
The sample is spun in a centrifuge to separate the platelet-rich plasma from the other blood components.
Treatment
The PRP is injected into the targeted area or applied to the skin immediately following microneedling.
Results
Improvement develops gradually over several weeks as collagen is remodeled. A series of treatments is usually recommended.
FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions about PRP
Is PRP safe?
PRP is prepared from your own blood, so it is biocompatible and carries no risk of allergic reaction. The draw and preparation are performed under sterile conditions in the office.
Does it hurt?
The blood draw feels like a routine lab test. When PRP is injected, a topical numbing cream is applied first; when applied after microneedling, most patients feel only a cool sensation.
How many sessions will I need?
Most patients begin with a series of three treatments spaced about four to six weeks apart, followed by maintenance sessions. Your plan depends on your concern and goals.
When will I see results?
Because PRP works by stimulating your own repair processes, improvement is gradual — typically becoming noticeable at four to eight weeks and continuing to build with each session.
Is there downtime?
PRP alone involves essentially no downtime. When combined with microneedling, expect one to three days of redness from the microneedling portion.
Can PRP be used for hair loss?
Yes. Scalp PRP is used to support hair density in selected patients with thinning hair. We will review whether you are a candidate as part of a full hair-loss evaluation.
