Infectious Skin Disease

The skin can be infected by bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites — including cellulitis, impetigo, shingles, ringworm, and scabies. Presentations range from mild and localized to rapidly progressive.

Correct identification is essential, since treatments differ entirely between these categories. We use clinical examination along with cultures, scrapings, or biopsy when the diagnosis is uncertain.
